Here are the starters in Pokemon Daimond and Pokemon Pearl (sprites from pokemon.marriland.com):

3871.gif Turtwig:  The Grass type starter.  It learns pretty good moves for a starter, is good for the first and fourth gym.  It is bad for the 7th gym unless you evoplve it to its last stage.  It evolves into Grotle a grass type, and Torterra a grass and ground type and instantl learns earthquake.
3901.gifChimchar: The Fire type starter.  It is a pretty good starter like Turtwig and learns some good moves.  It is like Torchic though, because its evolutions Monferno and Infernape are both fire and fighting types.  It is good for the first gym if you evolve it, the second, and seventh gym
3931.gifPiplup: A great starter for sinnoh.  It learns great moves for the gyms and trainers and it evolves into the water type Prinplup and then into the water and steel type Empoleon.  It is good for the first, second (if it learned peck or drill peck), third (if it knows peck or drill peck), seventh ( if it has learned earthquake), and eight (if it has learned earthquake).
Piplup was my starter, and i beat the game pretty easily so my reccomendation is pick Piplup as a starter.
